Reading
for Meaning™ programme
is
a reading, writing, listening and speaking
programme for young children, aged
3 years and above, who are learning
English as a second language. It is
divided into staged reading books with
the initial stages focusing on development
of oral language, whilst emphasising
listening and speaking skills. Later
stages focus on vocabulary development
and advanced reading skills. It differs
from other reading programmes in that
it is specifically targeted at children
who are learning English as a second
language and therefore concentrates
not only on developing vocabulary and
speech patterns, but also incorporates
creative activities and role playing
to help the children act out new concepts
and language. |

The reading
programme features a delightful group
of characters known as the Toppees who
have been designed especially to appeal
to children and to deliver the skills
required for proficient early reading
ability. The five characters – Kaz,
Nat, Sass, Tip and Gus the dog – form
Club T and the various books in the programme
follow the adventures of these characters.
